Real Custom Packaging Project | DHP Boxes
How DHP Boxes helped a premium gift packaging customer overcome digital printing streaks and color variation through Pantone offset printing, pre-production sample verification, and revised gold foil logo finishing.
In custom luxury packaging, a well-constructed box is only part of the solution. The color, printing quality, finishing details, and overall presentation must also meet a brand's expectations.
This real project involved two custom-colored magnetic rigid gift boxes. While the initial samples demonstrated excellent structural quality, the customer was disappointed by streaking and color inconsistencies in the digitally printed surfaces.
Rather than overlooking the issue, the DHP Boxes team worked with the customer to refine the printing approach, establish new color references, and verify the appearance through a pre-production sample before proceeding with the remaining production stages.
The customer needed custom-sized magnetic rigid boxes in two different colors for premium gift packaging. The boxes had to combine a refined appearance with sufficient structural strength to accommodate heavier gifts.
The requested design included anti-scratch matte lamination, a high-quality logo finish, precise custom dimensions, and a secure magnetic closure.
For this project, packaging quality was not limited to appearance. The customer also wanted strong magnets, dependable construction, and confidence that the boxes would remain functional when used for heavier gift items.
DHP Boxes developed physical samples so the customer could evaluate the dimensions, opening structure, magnetic strength, surface appearance, and overall construction.
The first samples were produced using digital CMYK printing. Although the customer was impressed by the box construction, the printed surfaces did not meet the intended visual standard.
The digital samples showed noticeable streaking and variations in color appearance. This was particularly visible because the packaging design used large areas of relatively uniform color.
The customer openly expressed dissatisfaction with the digital printing result and felt that samples from other suppliers had demonstrated better color quality.
This feedback was important. For premium magnetic gift packaging, an inconsistent printed surface can reduce the visual impact of the entire product, even when the underlying construction is well made.
Despite concerns about printing, the customer recognized several strengths in the DHP Boxes samples.
This combination of structural quality and responsive service gave the customer confidence to continue the project while the printing concerns were being addressed.
After discussing the customer's concerns, DHP Boxes explained the differences between the digital sampling process and the offset printing process planned for mass production.
Digital printing and offset printing use different ink-transfer technologies. Their appearance and uniformity can differ, especially on packaging with large solid-color areas.
For this project, the DHP Boxes team recommended using offset printing for production and moving from the original digital CMYK approach to Pantone spot colors.
Pantone spot-color references help define a more specific color target during printing. Unlike reproducing a color solely through a combination of CMYK process inks, spot-color printing uses an ink formulated for the selected color.
This approach can support more consistent color matching when the same color target, substrate, ink formulation, and production conditions are properly controlled.
However, Pantone printing is not an automatic guarantee of a perfect match. Paper characteristics, lamination, lighting, ink application, and printing conditions can all affect the perceived result.
For that reason, verifying the actual printed surface through a pre-production sample was an important part of this project's solution.
The customer agreed to use Pantone colors for the production order. This provided a clearer color reference than relying only on the appearance of the original digital samples.
The objective was to achieve the agreed visual appearance while eliminating the objectionable streaking seen in the initial digital printing.
The printing process was not the only detail revised during the project.
The customer's initial samples featured an embossed logo, and the customer had been impressed by the quality of the dimensional effect.
However, before production, the customer decided to change the logo treatment from embossing to gold foil stamping.
The two finishes offer different visual characteristics. Embossing creates a raised, tactile surface, while gold foil stamping transfers metallic foil to selected areas to create a reflective decorative effect.
On the soft matte packaging surface, the gold foil logo provided metallic contrast without requiring complex printed graphics.
DHP Boxes incorporated this revised finishing requirement into the updated packaging specifications.
To address the customer's concerns, a pre-production sample was prepared after the production order had been placed.
This allowed the customer and DHP Boxes to assess the printing result under the revised production specifications before moving forward with the subsequent batch finishing process.
Compare the printed sample with the agreed Pantone color direction and evaluate the overall appearance.
Check whether the streaking and uneven appearance reported during digital sampling have been resolved.
Proceed with the subsequent batch gold foil stamping process after the print quality is accepted.
The pre-production sample achieved the required color appearance without the visible streaking that had caused dissatisfaction during the initial digital sampling stage.
Following this confirmation, the project proceeded with the approved gold foil finishing plan.
The approved pre-production samples demonstrated the revised appearance of the two magnetic rigid gift boxes.
Both colorways featured a smooth matte visual presentation, metallic gold logo treatment, and the rigid construction that had been a major strength of the initial samples.
The open-box design also allowed the customer to evaluate the internal space, folding panels, and practical opening arrangement.
Most importantly, the revised printing approach resolved the original visible streaking concern and achieved the appearance required for pre-production approval.
These photographs document the pre-production sample stage, rather than the completed mass production shipment.
The customer was satisfied with the revised results, and the approved samples provided a practical reference for the production process.
On September 21, 2026, the customer published a five-star review following the initial sampling experience and the decision to proceed with mass production.
The review recognized both the positive aspects of the project and the digital printing issues that still needed to be addressed.
"The gift boxes themselves were made exactly to the sizes specified and were well constructed with strong magnets."
Actual customer review | September 21, 2026The customer also expressed confidence in the strength of the packaging for heavier gifts and praised the initial embossed logo quality.
Although the review mentioned streaking and color variation in the digital samples, the customer explained that they had decided to proceed with mass production using Pantone colors.
Another important part of the feedback was the communication provided by Tina, the DHP Boxes representative responsible for the project.
The customer appreciated the timely sample dispatch, protective packaging during transportation, responsive communication, and the availability of photographs and videos throughout the process.
This review was written before the later pre-production sample confirmation. The subsequent improvement in print quality and the customer's satisfaction with the revised result form a separate stage of the project.
This case study shows why successful custom packaging manufacturing involves more than simply reproducing an approved design.
The first samples already met the customer's expectations in several important areas, including structural accuracy, magnetic strength, and embossed finishing quality.
However, the digital printing appearance fell short of the customer's visual expectations.
DHP Boxes addressed this concern through technical communication, a revised printing approach, clearer color references, and pre-production sample verification.
The project also demonstrates the importance of flexibility. The customer was able to change the logo finishing requirement from embossing to gold foil stamping before the revised production process moved forward.
As a China-based custom rigid box manufacturer, DHP Boxes supports packaging projects that require coordinated structural design, printing, finishing, sampling, and production planning.
Our goal is to help buyers turn their packaging requirements into a technically workable, visually appropriate and manufacturable solution.
Digital printing uses a different printing process from offset printing. Color appearance may vary due to printing technology, calibration, inks, substrate characteristics and finishing conditions. A physical sample should be evaluated before approval.
Pantone spot colors provide defined color references and can support closer color matching when combined with appropriate inks, substrates and printing controls. Actual printed samples remain important for final approval.
A digital sample is typically produced with digital printing equipment and may be used to review design and construction. A pre-production sample is intended to verify agreed specifications and production characteristics before further manufacturing stages.
Yes, depending on the packaging design and production stage. Gold foil provides a metallic surface effect, while embossing creates dimensional relief. In this project, the customer changed the original embossed logo design to gold foil stamping.
Magnetic rigid boxes can be engineered for different product weights. Board thickness, structural design, magnetic closure, internal support and product dimensions should all be considered when developing packaging for heavier items.
Yes. DHP Boxes develops customized rigid packaging with project-specific dimensions, structural designs, printing requirements, surface finishes and branding options. The suitable production approach is evaluated according to the packaging specifications.
